Here is a great Astrud Gilberto classic remixed by trip hop producers Koop (Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson) (Read interview with Koop Here). They kept true to the bossa jazz sound of Astrud and hence a simply fantastic song was created:

Here’s That Rainy Day — Astrud Gilberto

Last but not least is a little rare New Orleans funk Jem that I just found in an entire Soul Jazz compilation of New Orleans Funk. Gentleman June Gardner come at you with horns just begging to be sampled. The song its self is simple. There are no crazy solos, but rather its a nice composition from front to back:

It’s Gonna Rain — Gentleman June Gardner

Here is how it went down:
I slowly gained my number one seed proceeding into the final four. I was ready to secure my third year in a row win, and a total sum of 520 dollars ($200 two years prior, $120 last year, and the possible $200 this year). I had Florida, UCLA, Ohio State, and UNC… WAIT… SAY WHAT!?!?
Not cool North Carolina. You guys sucked a fatty and lost me $10 and stopped me from winning my 520th dollar. And in overtime! You guys really let me down.
Now I must sit here, and watch my friends win all MY money.
Thanks.

Here are some songs about basketball for all you loosers (and one just becasue it was on Jock Rock volume 2):

Let’s get reacquainted. First off, I feel like a jerkaholic! Where have I been to fill you musical needs. For this, I apologize to you, the blogger massive. Right now one of the RRGJ crew is in the home of the Pope and gelato while the other is MIA, possible somewhere in New England. It’s just me, myself, and I manning the ship. And on this ship’s poop deck we’ve got some tunes that are quite enjoyable. I’ve been playing each of these non-stop for the past couple of weeks. I just cant get enough (no-Depeche-Mode-o). Here they are:

Neva Eva X Walk It Out — DJ Ayres

Download this song and get on my level. Both of the original songs are great so why not put ‘em together. Thank you Mr.Ayres!

D.A.N.C.E. — Justice

Them Frenchmen are good at electro! Justice will make you DANCE!!! (Don’t fight it). Plus that English Kiddie Choir is great.

To stick with the medieval thing, here are my favoite medieval themed sites on the internet:

This past Thursday, Sam and I dawdled down to the sold out of Montreal show at the troc. Bigger than any venue of Montreal has played at thus far in the city of brotherly love, over 1000 people packed into the old theater. Both Mixel Pixel and Grand Buffet opened for them. To say it as blunt as possible, Mixel Pixel was just bad. The three things they had going for them were their matching outfits, glittery makeup (which was obviously a cue taken from of Montreal) and cool light show. Well actually just the outfits. The light show gave me a headache. But anywho, I wouldn’t necessarily listen to Grand Buffet in the comfort of my own home, but they did put on a hell of a funny show. There isn’t much that i enjoy more than pencil thin red bearded Irish fella and a fat man with his chain hanging low rapping.

So by the time of Montreal took the stage, Sam and I managed to make our way towards the front half of the room. This was both good and bad. You see, the crowd was moshing and crowd surfing and just generally be obnoxious, and there I was, all 5 feet 2 inches of me, unwillingly getting pushed around. Blasted. But despite the aggressive crowd of smelly indie kids, their performance was one of the best I have ever seen. Near the beginning of their set, Kevin somehow managed maneuver himself into this huge Aztec God/Fruit lady outfit (it’s debatable). It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen on stage. And he had this awesome lobster claw which he wore for a few songs. Also, throughout the whole show, this guy in a tight white jumpsuit kinda just loomed around on stage eating grapes and throwing them into the audience, one of which happened to hit me in the head. He also came on stage with the flag of Norway, the country that Kevin resided in while recording part of the latest album. Unfortunately, Sam and I had to leave 2 songs into the encore because we had an 11 o’clock curfew (cute.) But i heard that they played a fiery furnaces cover which led into a talking heads cover (I’m not sure specifically what songs). Visually, I was blown away, and the music of course was amazing.
Here are a few pictures from the show, you can see the rest here

and here are 2 videos from the show i found on youtube:

Dear Schoolhouse Rock,

You are no help. Your catchy songs with their rhymes and finger snapping melodies only manage to make me more confused than i already am. Your cute cartoon bill only seems to inform me that he lives on capitol hill and likes to eat krill and that his middle name is Phil… Maybe not the last two, but still, If that goddamn bill song is going to get stuck in my head, you could have at least made it sing the correct information. Thanks for nothing. jerk.

Lets take a trip back to hip hop’s golden age. Here are a few rare joints by those dudes q, phife, and Ali shaheed. These come from the album “Revised Quest for a Seasoned Traveler” - a remix compilation put out in 1992.

The first one, Pubic Enemy (Saturday Night Virus Discomix), is a sweet mix of a great Tribe song with a bass line that sounds like it was ripped from rappers delight…but better. The title is misleading, it’s not a very “disco-y” song (maybe it is compared to their original stuff). It definitely keeps the essence of ATCQ intact with the simple drum pattern and organ part during the chorus/bridge.

Bonita Applebum (Hootie Mix) is my second favorite remix on this album, and no, it is not a Hootie and the Blowfish remix (thank god). It actually takes the same sample used for Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa.” That song is the great Isley Brothers slow jam “Between The Sheets” (OoOlaLa). This remix strays form the classic tribe sound, but it works very well.

The Third Song, Luck Of Lucian (Main Mix), is the most abstract out of the bunch. It takes the hip-house sound that was starting up in the early 90s (See “Doo Doo Brown” et al.) and mixes it up with one of my favorite tribe songs. This departure from ATCQ’s style is very interesting because it contrasts their original jazz rap sound with the sound of dance/house music - a genre that usually offers little in terms of story telling and emotional journeying.

For the past few nights we’ve been scrambling to see the last of the films we missed that are nominated for academy awards. Last night I went to see Notes on a Scandal, and a few nights before that we rented Half Nelson.

Notes on a Scandal, starring Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, creeped me out more than anything i have ever seen in the most wonderful way possible. Judi Dench should undoubtedly win the oscar for best actress. I mean, I have never felt so skeaved out in my entire life. Her character is a Lonely predator whose only friend is her diary “Another gold star day, diary.” Dench discovers Blanchett’s biggest secret and as Dench so starkly says “We are bound by the secrets we share.”

Ryan Gosling brought the goods. Half Nelson is a sincere story of a student who finds her teacher in the bathroom smoking crack but understands the struggle. Both characters end up saving each other from a bad ending. Opposite Gosling, Shareeka Epps, a newbie to tinsel town, was remarkable. She actually just won the Spirit award for best supporting actress which was awesome. I deffinetly reccomend this flick, especcially to teachers. I love a good teacher movie.

Anyhow, just thought I’d post something up seeing that it’s been a while since there has been activity on here. I’ll post some songs later for your pleasure. Cheers!
