What I’ve Learned
What I’ve Learned (This assignment imitates the weekly interviews written in Esquire Magazine which describe what an individual has learned throughout their life).
- I am obsessed with Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Heroine, Holly Golightly, is a sophisticated uptown girl who acts like a crazy lunatic—I just love it!
- “We attract that which we retreat from,” is a Chinese proverb. This is insightful love advice.
- Most athletes enjoy playing on the first court at a tournament—I hate it.
- 99.9% of tennis players are mentally unstable on the court. Some professional coaches label this breed as “crazed squirrels.” That being said, Johnny Mac was the greatest crazed squirrel to ever hit a ball. Sadly, I am usually emotional on the court but I have played my best matches when I am in the other .1%. This minority of tennis players are: calm, confident, focused, and 100% in the zone. Roger Federer represents the rare even tempered player, which would explain why he is indomitable. His perfect backhand doesn’t hurt either.
- I do not value or require sleep as much as other teenagers. Often I wish I shared this common interest with my friends. Seven solid hours and I am good to go. Cereal on a Saturday morning is one of my favorite past times. I would not give up this ritual to sleep late in a million years.
- Jealously is natural yet very unappealing. Though it is inevitable to feel jealous I try to avoid feeling jealous by not comparing myself to other people. There will always be someone who is better then you at something.
- …and those few people who choose not to finish their milk while eating cereal are enigmas! Anyone who eats cereal this way, all I can say is that you’re missing out.
- I really admire funny people. Since day one I have been the friend that laughs at jokes, never the friend that makes them. When the special occasion arises and I crack a decent joke my friends and I are both equally surprised.
- Olives, pears, and beets are all foods I used to hate when I was younger. Now I love eating all of them. This fascinates me.
- I am not an outwardly sensitive person, but I cry in every movie (no matter how cheesy it is), Peter Pan, Homeward Bound, you name it…the tears just roll out.
- Having the last word is very satisfying.
