Spring Sports Get Started March 17, 2009

Spring is here and the teams have begun their seasons. Despite a snowstorm two weeks ago and some cold days recently, the teams are gearing up for a spring full of potential. Baseball began this past weekend with home “scrimmage victories” over Central High and Roman Catholic. Girls lacrosse had a scrimmage with Ridley, looking good at times and at other times looking like it was their first scrimmage. But against GFS last Thursday they came together and finished with an overwhelming victory. Boys lacrosse beat Loyola Blakley, 6-5, in a Saturday evening game at Drexel University. Softball held scrimmages/games with GMA and Central High. Boys track hosted HGP last week. Golf, girls track and boys tennis begin their seasons this week.
Much of our ability to get the spring sports going has to do with the effort and dedication of the outside field crew. Led by Phil Palkon, Superintendent of Grounds and Transportation, these men toil in all kinds of conditions to prepare the fields, tennis courts, and track for practice and competition. Without their outstanding work and can-do attitude, teams might not be playing until April. Their efforts often fall into the category of unsung heroes, but they are greatly appreciated.
