Wrestling Appreciation Day December 15, 2008
Posted by pbutler in : From the Sidelines, OPC Headlines , add a commentOlympian Visits with the Penn Charter Wrestling Team
Our wrestling team was treated to a surprise visit from the all-time greatest collegiate wrestler in America. Dan Gable, the legendary Olympic wrester was in the audience for our Wrestling Appreciation Day this past Friday. During and after our scheduled match with Conwell Egan High School, Gable spent time visiting with the entire PC wrestling community. However, it was especially impressive when he spoke privately with our team after the match. He focused attention on the importance of promoting wrestling and the values that he learned from a lifelong pursuit of excellence in a sport that he loved. Dan Gable shook hands with all the boys and signed many autographs, including signing his name on the wall of the team locker room.
The purpose of this special event was to provide motivation for today’s young PC grapplers and to connect them to the legacy of PC wrestling. On this appreciation day we welcomed the return of nine past champions. These men were all outstanding wrestlers and achieved the highest level possible in prep school wrestling. The group included NCAA National Champion Bill Stuart OPC ‘61 and eight National Prep Champs: Bob Jones OPC ‘63, David Icenhower OPC ‘67, Bob Barretta OPC ‘70, Rich White OPC ‘71, Steve Shaifer OPC ‘79, Peter Shaifer OPC ‘82, Rob Hitschler OPC ‘03, and Colin Hitschler OPC ‘05.
The day was also a time for the entire wrestling program to say thank you to William A. Graham IV OPC ‘58. The recent improvements to the wrestling room and the entire activities building were made possible by his support and generosity.
