Girls Squash Rises to Occasion February 9, 2010

Boys and girls squash teams participated in the National High School Team Squash Championships at Yale University this weekend and traveled home with great results. Our boys performed better than expected in their bracket, finishing second; victories over GFS and Shipley were especially gratifying as the team lost to both schools during the regular season.  The girls rose to the challenge of this very competitive tournament: They defeated both Episcopal and Baldwin (league champs) on their way to a third place finish behind Greenwich Academy and Lawrenceville Prep. The girls played very well as individuals and as a team. Kudos to both boys and girls teams for their performance.  According to coaches Geoff Shields and Ileana Novelo, the PC kids played hard under pressure and performed with skill and sportsmanship, keeping the name of Penn Charter prominent on the national high school squash scene.

At the league diving championships, hosted by Episcopal Academy, Kyle Bonus (11th grade) repeated as champion.  Kyle won first place with a score of 250.80; the next closest competitor scored 221.10. Kudos to Kyle for this outstanding individual performance.

The girls and boys water polo teams came home smiling from Easterns on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8. The girls defeated Lawrenceville, 9-8, on a last-second shot. The victory put them in the championship game versus Episcopal. P.C. won the game 6-4 to claim the championship.  Kyle Bonus, Lela Garner, Becca Mount and Lauren Trager made the all-tournament team.  The P.C. boys team finished in third place; Loyola and Calvert Hall took first and second place respectively. Anthony Lordi and Mac Ferrick made the all-tournament team.

Also, varsity football deserves kudos. After three tough losses to Malvern, Haverford and CHA, the boys took on Episcopal at home. They put in a solid team day and defeated EA 37-20.

Girls Cross Country Tops a Busy PC Weekend September 28, 2009

The girls cross country team finished first Saturday in the girls portion of the 57th George School Invitational Cross Country Meet. The morning rain showers did nothing to dampen the will of our girl harriers. This young team was led by the performance of ninth grader Katie Skinner, who finished first in a time of 20 minutes 13 seconds – which was three seconds ahead of the second place runner.  A complete story can be found at http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/high_school/20090927_Penn_Charter_girls_win_George_School_Invitational.html?viewAll=y&c=y

Varsity football defeated Peddie School 32 –13, securing their first win of the season.  Senior captain Mike X. Brown had two touchdowns and QB John Loughery was sharp, with more than 200 yards passing for the third game in a row.  The team’s record is now 1-2 going into next week’s away game with an always-tough Hun School squad.

Boys soccer was in a tight contest with Peddie on Saturday. With the game tied 1-1 and 8:00 minutes remaining, juniors Rob Friskey and Michael Goldman each scored a goal to provide the margin for a 3-1 victory.

More than 30 athletes and their families visited on Saturday for our 5th Annual Athletic Visiting Day, a program offered in collaboration with the Alumni Society and the Athletic Department.  After a welcome and a short introductory program, the visitors learned about Penn Charter from current coaches while they toured the campus.  Many of the families were able to stay for lunch and to watch our teams in action.  Games with Peddie School included varsity and junior varsity field hockey, varsity football, varsity boys and girls soccer, and girls tennis.

Matt Ryan OPC ’03 continues to represent his old school quite well. Matt was featured on the Fox NFL pre-game show this past Sunday.  Visit the link below to see the report on “Matty Ice.”  Look for his picture in his old PC football jersey. (And forget the picture reference to his 8th grade year at Malvern.)

And speaking of OPCs in professional sports, Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski has announced signing of four free agents — including Sean Singletary. Sixers training camp runs from Sept. 29 to Oct 3 at Saint Joe's University
