PENN CHARTER WINS 17 TO 8!

Boys Water Polo was victorious in a long-awaited PC-GA Day win. While at first the game was close—tied at 3-3 in the middle of the second quarter—Charter scored fourteen more goals for a final score of 17-8. Senior Chris Tiano scored five goals and junior Sam Lozoff had three goals. The Maurer twins, both juniors, also dominated in the game, with Kyle scoring six goals and Jeremy scoring three goals and giving two assists. Phenomenal junior goalie Elias Tanner had thirteen saves.

The Boys Water Polo team has had an extremely successful season. Senior captain Chris Tiano and junior captains Jeremy and Kyle Maurer have led the team to an impressive 25-5 record. While the lively and enthusiastic team can often be seen running around campus in speedos, they are serious, disciplined and motivated when it comes to game time. Though the team is young, with only one starting senior (Tiano), the fierce group is cohesive and has great chemistry. Jeremy Maurer stresses that their power stems from not just the starters, but the team as a whole with their “powerful and beastlike off the bench players.” It also can’t hurt that the team is extremely fond of their coach—Middle School teacher Charlie Brown. Charlie unifies and inspires the team with his passion and knowledge of the sport. Jeremy professed that the whole team “has man love for Charlie,” affectionately referring to him as “C.B.” or “Wagon.”

This season, the team only suffered only one Inter-Ac loss: the Haverford School. However, the team has played Haverford a total of four times this season (in various tournaments), and defeated the school in the remaining three games. During PC’s one loss to Haverford, Eastern first team all-prep goalie Elias Tanner could not play because of a concussion. The team’s most challenging game was when they conquered Haverford at the Haverford School when leading scorer Tiano was absent. PC has already obtainedS the Inter-Ac title, but PC-GA day determines whether they are the sole Inter-Ac champions or co-champions with Haverford.

Last PC-GA day, the team suffered a devastating upset, losing to GA 10-9. But this year they showed GA the kind of season they’ve had—a season of triumph.

Though the seniors will be missed, the boys water polo team can look forward to promising future with the return of two of the team’s leading scorers, Jeremy and Kyle, as well as skilled sophomores Drew Bonus and Anthony Lordi.
